Charles Cole
Charles “Chuck” Cole is the newest member the United Country/Mixon Realty team and will be working in a wide range of properties, including country homes, in-town residences, farms, ranches, and cabins and land suited to hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation. An avid fly fisherman, he has enjoyed living for 35 years in a region that features cold tailwater releases and numerous warm water rivers and lakes scattered throughout wooded hills and mountains that include large portions of the Ouachita National Forest and Talimena Scenic Drive.

A member of the Carl Albert State College staff since the summer of 1980, Cole retired in 2010. He was graduated from Texas Christian University in 1969 with degrees in journalism, biology, and education, and worked as a general assignment reporter for the Fort Worth, TX, Star-Telegram until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

Military assignments took him to Altus AFB in southwestern Oklahoma and to the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs where he edited the bases’ newspapers. After discharge from the USAF in December of 1973, he became editor of the Weatherford, OK, Daily News. Two years later, he left the newspaper and attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University to study for a master’s degree in education while working part-time as a teaching assistant in the biology department and as a writer and photographer in the public relations office. He received his M.Ed. in 1976 and became a full-time assistant in the SWOSU public relations office.

CASC hired him in the summer of 1980 to teach journalism and photography and to serve as the school’s public relations director. He later became director of the college’s Office of Continuing Education and also served as chairperson of the Division of Communications and Fine Arts and the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences before becoming full-time faculty. When he decided to retire in 2010, the college’s top academic officers asked him to continue serving CASC as an adjunct English composition instructor.

In addition to his work at the college, he was among a small group of parents who initiated the Poteau youth soccer program in the early 1980s. He coached youth teams for a few years before becoming one of the program’s lead referees, eventually moving on to officiate high school soccer matches in the opening years of the boys’ and girls’ teams at Poteau High School.

“Real estate is a totally new experience for me, but I have found the work to be intriguing, interesting, challenging, and stimulating,” says Cole. “I am grateful to Jim Mixon and to Darali Mixon for the opportunity.”
